Ahrefs Alternative Tools: The Best Ahrefs Alternatives, Priced and Compared

There is no single Ahrefs alternative, because Ahrefs is four products in one subscription: a backlink index, a keyword database, a rank tracker and a site auditor. The cheapest way to leave is to work out which of those four you actually open every week, then buy only that. Most teams find they were paying $249 a month for a backlink index they check twice a quarter.

All prices read from each vendor's own pricing page on August 29, 2026. Written for US buyers. Where a vendor does not publish a price, this page says so instead of guessing.

Or replace the part Ahrefs never did

Ahrefs tells you what to write. Add your domain and Rankable maps the topic clusters worth owning, then writes and publishes the optimized articles with the research and internal linking already done.

The best Ahrefs alternative, in one paragraph

If you want a like-for-like swap, Semrush at $139 a month is the only tool that credibly replaces all four halves of Ahrefs at once, and it is the one most teams move to. If you mainly used Ahrefs for keyword ideas, Ubersuggest at $29 a month covers it for a fraction of the cost. If what you actually needed was the content that the keyword data implied, a research platform is the wrong purchase entirely and you want a writing engine instead.

The uncomfortable answer many buyers reach is that the cheapest Ahrefs alternative is Ahrefs. The Starter plan is $29 a month, and it did not exist when most of the comparison articles you are reading were written. Before you migrate a whole team, check whether Starter covers your usage, because switching platforms costs a week of everyone's time and Starter costs less than lunch.

The trap in this category is per-seat pricing. Every Ahrefs plan, including the $449 Advanced tier, includes exactly one user. Additional seats run $40, $60 and $80 a month by tier, so a five-person team on Advanced is not paying $449, it is paying $769. Clearscope, by contrast, puts unlimited users on every tier, which flips the maths completely once you are past two people. Run your real headcount through both before you decide, and read our full breakdown of Ahrefs pricing for the per-tier detail.

One thing no honest page should skip: nothing on this list matches Ahrefs on backlink data. Ahrefs runs its own web crawler, and that index is the reason the product costs what it costs. If link analysis is the job, budget for Ahrefs or Semrush and stop shopping. Everything below is about the other three jobs.

Ahrefs alternatives compared on price and what they actually replace

Prices read from each vendor's own pricing page on August 29, 2026. The column that decides most purchases is not the price, it is whether the tool replaces the specific Ahrefs feature you open on a Monday morning.

Tool Entry price Backlink index Rank tracking Writes articles Best for
Ahrefs $29 Starter, $129 Lite Yes, own crawler Yes No Link analysis and keyword depth
Semrush $139 a month Yes Yes Assistant only The closest like-for-like swap
SE Ranking EUR 109 a month Yes Yes No Cheapest full platform, agencies
Ubersuggest $29 a month Limited Yes No Solo marketers who only need keywords
Clearscope $129 a month No No Grades drafts, no finished posts Editorial teams, unlimited seats
Rankable $49 a month No No Yes, researches and publishes Teams who need the articles written

SE Ranking prices in euros, so a US buyer's real cost moves with the exchange rate, and its AI Search module is a paid add-on at plus EUR 79 a month. Moz is a common suggestion in this category but does not publish a price we can verify, so check moz.com/pricing directly rather than trusting a number from a comparison post. Ahrefs seats are extra on every tier.

What you gain and lose when you leave Ahrefs

Six differences big enough to change the decision, including the two where Ahrefs stays the better buy.

You lose the backlink index

This is the honest one. Ahrefs built its own crawler and the link graph it produces is the deepest in the industry. Semrush is genuinely competitive here and nothing else on this page is close. If you audit link profiles or sell link building, do not switch to save $100.

You lose rank tracking unless you replace it deliberately

Ahrefs tracks 750 keywords on Lite, 2,000 on Standard and 5,000 on Advanced. Semrush, SE Ranking and Ubersuggest all track rankings. Content platforms like Clearscope and Rankable do not, so if you leave for one of those, keep a tracker or accept that you are flying without that instrument.

You stop paying for seats you never used

A three-person team on Ahrefs Standard pays $249 plus two seats at $60, so $369 a month. The same team on Clearscope Essentials pays $129 flat because users are unlimited. Seat maths, not headline price, is where most of the real saving in this category lives.

You gain published output instead of research

Ahrefs hands you a keyword list and a content gap report. It does not write anything. The gap between knowing what to publish and having it published is where most content programs stall, and it is the gap a writing engine closes.

You keep the keyword data, mostly

Keyword databases are closer in quality than vendor marketing suggests. Third-party counts put Ahrefs and Semrush within a few percent of each other globally, and Semrush ahead on US keywords specifically. Volume accuracy is contested and no independent test has settled it, so treat both as estimates.

You lose site auditing at Ahrefs scale

Ahrefs includes 100,000 crawl credits on Lite and 1.5 million on Advanced. For a large site that is a real technical asset. Screaming Frog covers the same job for GBP 199 a year if crawling is the only reason you are still paying, and its free tier handles 500 URLs.

How to switch off Ahrefs without losing your data

1

Export before the term ends

Pull your tracked keyword lists, site audit history and any saved backlink reports to CSV while the subscription is live. Historical rank data does not migrate and cannot be rebuilt after the fact, so this is the one step with a hard deadline.

2

Write down which four jobs you actually did

Open your browser history for the last month and count which Ahrefs reports you genuinely used. Most teams discover they lived in Keywords Explorer and the rank tracker, and opened Site Explorer twice. That list, not the feature matrix, tells you what to buy.

3

Buy for the job, not the brand

If the list was keywords plus rankings, Ubersuggest at $29 or SE Ranking covers it. If it was link analysis, stay on Ahrefs or move to Semrush. If it was content planning you never had time to execute, buy an engine that publishes rather than another dashboard.

4

Run both for one billing cycle

Overlap for 30 days and compare the two tools on ten keywords you know well. Estimates will differ and that is expected. What matters is whether the new tool ranks the same pages in the same order, because that is the judgment you will actually act on.

Which Ahrefs alternative fits which buyer

The solo consultant paying $129 for Lite

Check Ahrefs Starter at $29 first. It is the same data at a usage cap, and for one person auditing a handful of client sites it is frequently enough. If it is not, Ubersuggest at $29 is the next stop.

The five-person in-house team

Seats are your problem, not features. Ahrefs Advanced for five people is $769 a month. Price Semrush and Clearscope on the same headcount before you renew, because unlimited-user pricing changes the answer entirely.

The agency running twenty client sites

SE Ranking is built for this and costs less than Ahrefs Standard, though its AI Search module is a separate line item. Ahrefs Advanced covers 50 projects if you would rather not move.

The team that has the keywords and no articles

More research will not help. You already know what to write. This is the case where leaving a data platform for a publishing engine genuinely changes the output, and where our own product is the honest recommendation.

The developer who only wanted the API

Ahrefs no longer publishes an API price list, so budgeting means talking to sales. Read what is actually knowable in our guide to Ahrefs API pricing before you plan a project around it.

The buyer who just wants it cheaper

Say it plainly: annual billing on Ahrefs saves up to 17 percent, and Starter is $29. Between those two levers, most people asking for a cheaper Ahrefs alternative are best served by a cheaper Ahrefs.

Rankable compared with Ahrefs, honestly

These two are not competing for the same job, which is worth knowing before you switch. Here is where each one is genuinely stronger.

Capability Rankable Manual / point tools
Backlink index No, and we will not pretend otherwise Yes, its own crawler, best in class
Rank tracking No Yes, 750 to 5,000 keywords by tier
Site auditing No Yes, 100,000 to 1.5 million crawl credits
Writes finished articles Yes, researched, optimized and published No, it reports and you write
Internal linking done for you Yes, across the cluster it builds Reports orphan pages, does not fix them
Users included Team access on every plan One, extra seats $40 to $80 a month
Entry price $49 a month, listed publicly $29 Starter, $129 Lite

Ahrefs alternative questions, answered

What is the best Ahrefs alternative?

Semrush at $139 a month is the best like-for-like Ahrefs alternative, because it is the only other tool with a comparable backlink index, keyword database, rank tracker and site auditor in one subscription. If you only used one of those four, a cheaper specialist tool will serve you better than another all-in-one platform.

Is there a cheaper alternative to Ahrefs?

Yes. Ubersuggest starts at $29 a month for keyword research and rank tracking, and SE Ranking starts at EUR 109 for a full platform. The cheapest option is often Ahrefs' own Starter plan at $29 a month, which many comparison articles predate and therefore never mention.

How much does Ahrefs cost?

Ahrefs publishes five tiers: Starter at $29, Lite at $129, Standard at $249, Advanced at $449 and Enterprise at $1,499 a month with an annual commitment. Every tier includes one user, with extra seats at $40, $60 and $80 a month. Paying annually saves up to 17 percent. Full detail is in our Ahrefs pricing guide.

Is Semrush better than Ahrefs?

Neither is better outright. Semrush is stronger on US keyword coverage, paid search data and its wider toolkit; Ahrefs is stronger on backlink data and has a cleaner interface. Semrush starts at $139 against Ahrefs Lite at $129, so price rarely decides it. See our Ahrefs vs Semrush comparison.

Is there a free Ahrefs alternative?

Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is free for sites you verify and gives you backlink and site audit data for your own domain, which covers the common case. Google Search Console is free and more accurate for your own performance data. Free tools will not give you competitor link data at any useful depth.

What is the best Ahrefs API alternative?

Because Ahrefs no longer publishes API pricing publicly, the practical alternatives are Semrush, which does document an API unit model, or the DataForSEO style providers that sell SERP data per request. Which one fits depends entirely on whether you need link data or ranking data.

Does Ahrefs have a free trial?

No. Ahrefs does not offer a free trial of its paid plans and has not for years. It offers Ahrefs Webmaster Tools free for verified sites, and the $29 Starter plan is the lowest-cost way to evaluate the paid data. Clearscope runs a 14-day trial and Frase a 7-day trial if trials matter to your process.

Can I replace Ahrefs with an AI SEO tool?

Only for the content half. AI SEO tools plan topics, write drafts and publish, but none of them crawl the web for backlinks or track rankings at Ahrefs' scale. Teams that switch successfully are the ones who were using Ahrefs to decide what to write, not to analyze links.

How much does Rankable cost compared with Ahrefs?

Rankable is $49 a month for Starter, $149 for Growth and $499 for Scale. Ahrefs Lite is $129 a month for one seat. They are not substitutes: Ahrefs gives you data and Rankable gives you published articles, so a number of teams keep a cheap Ahrefs tier and buy the writing separately.

Stop buying reports you do not have time to act on

Rankable maps your topic clusters, writes the optimized articles, links them together and publishes on your schedule, starting at $49 a month with pricing you can read on the site.
