Ahrefs vs Semrush: Pricing, Keyword Data, and Which Is Better in 2026
Ahrefs starts at $129 a month for the Lite plan, Semrush at $139 for the SEO plan. The sticker prices are almost identical, so the decision comes down to three things nobody puts on the pricing page: what each seat costs, whose keyword data is better for US search specifically, and how much AI search tracking you get before the add-on fees start.
Every price below was read directly from ahrefs.com/pricing and semrush.com/prices on August 23, 2026. Written for US marketing teams and agencies allocating an SEO software budget.

Ahrefs vs Semrush: the short answer
Buy Ahrefs if backlinks are the center of your work and you run SEO at scale across many sites. Buy Semrush if you want one platform covering SEO, paid search, and competitor intelligence, or if AI search visibility tracking is a line item you need this year. For a US-focused content team, Semrush has the edge on keyword data specifically; for link analysis, Ahrefs is still the reference the rest of the category gets measured against. Neither one writes or publishes your articles.
That last sentence is the part most comparisons skip, and it is usually the real reason a team is shopping. Both of these are research and diagnosis platforms. They tell you what to do. Somebody on your side still has to sit down and produce the article, optimize it, get it into the CMS, and link it to the rest of the site. If your bottleneck is knowing what to write, either tool solves it. If your bottleneck is that nobody has ten hours a week to actually write it, neither one moves the needle and you are shopping in the wrong category.
The pricing looks close and then diverges fast. Ahrefs publishes Starter at $29, Lite at $129, Standard at $249, Advanced at $449, and Enterprise at $1,499 a month. Semrush publishes SEO at $139, Starter at $199, Pro+ at $299, and Advanced at $549, with annual billing dropping those to $117.33, $165.17, $248.17, and $455.67 a month. On paper that is a $10 gap at the entry tier and a $100 gap at the top. Seats and AI add-ons are what actually decide the bill, and we break the full ladders down in our Ahrefs pricing guide and our Semrush pricing guide.
Here is the seat math, because it changes the answer for any team larger than one person. Both products include exactly one user on every plan below Enterprise. Ahrefs charges $40 a month per extra seat on Lite (two more maximum), $60 on Standard (five more), and $80 on Advanced (ten more). Semrush charges from $45 a month per extra user across its tiers. So a three-person team on Ahrefs Standard pays $249 plus $120, which is $369. The same three people on Semrush Pro+ pay $299 plus roughly $90, which is $389. The gap that looked like $50 at the sticker level is closer to $20 once real people log in, and it flips depending on how many of them there are.
One correction worth making, because it is quoted wrong almost everywhere: Semrush retired the Pro, Guru, and Business plan names. If an article you are reading still prices Semrush at Guru $249.95 or Business $499.95, it has not been updated since the change and its other claims are probably stale too. The current ladder is SEO, Starter, Pro+, and Advanced.

| Tool | Entry plan | Top published plan | Extra seat | AI prompt tracking | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ahrefs | $29 Starter, $129 Lite | $1,499 Enterprise | $40 to $80/mo by tier | Brand Radar AI from $199/mo, prompt packs $50 to $250 | Backlink analysis, multi-site SEO at scale |
| Semrush | $139 SEO plan | $549 Advanced | From $45/mo | 50 prompts daily on Starter, 100 on Pro+, 200 on Advanced | All-in-one SEO plus paid search and competitor data |
| Surfer SEO | EUR 49 Discovery | EUR 999 Enterprise | Seats bundled by tier | None on Discovery, 25 weekly on Standard, 50 daily on Pro | Scoring a draft before you publish it |
| Rankable | $49 Starter | $499 Scale | Included in plan | Content written for AI search citation, not prompt tracking | Actually producing and publishing the articles |
Semrush lists a seven-day free trial and a limited free tier. Ahrefs offers a free account with capped data and no free trial on paid plans. Surfer prices only in euros and bills yearly, so a US buyer's real cost moves with the exchange rate.
Where each one actually wins
Both platforms cover most of the same surface. These are the six places the difference is large enough to decide a purchase.
Backlinks: Ahrefs
This is the least controversial call in the comparison. Ahrefs crawls the web continuously and its link index is what competitors benchmark against. Semrush's backlink database is genuinely large and has closed a lot of ground, but Ahrefs still surfaces new referring domains faster and more completely. If link building is your job, this alone settles it.
US keyword data: Semrush
Ahrefs has the bigger global keyword database at roughly 28.7 billion against Semrush's 27.8 billion. For US search specifically that reverses: Semrush indexes about 3.8 billion US keywords against Ahrefs' 2.5 billion. If your buyers are American, you will see more long-tail variants in Semrush, which matters more than the headline database size.
Search volume accuracy: contested
There is no clean winner and anyone claiming one is overselling. Semrush tends to score better in head-to-head volume studies, but it groups keyword variants together, which inflates individual figures. Ahrefs numbers usually sit closer to what Search Console reports per keyword. Treat both as directional and check Search Console once you have real data.
Breadth of platform: Semrush
Semrush covers paid search, display, social, PR, and local listings alongside SEO. Ahrefs stays deliberately narrow: links, keywords, rank tracking, site audits. If one subscription has to serve a whole marketing team rather than an SEO specialist, Semrush replaces more tools. If you only do SEO, most of that breadth is budget you will not use.
AI search tracking: read the plan carefully
Both sell it and both meter it hard. Semrush's daily prompt allowance starts at 50 on the $199 Starter plan, not on the $139 SEO plan, which is the single most common budgeting mistake here. Ahrefs puts serious AI visibility behind Brand Radar AI at $199 a month or more, plus prompt packs at $50, $100, and $250.
Scale across many sites: Ahrefs
Ahrefs Advanced covers 50 projects and 5,000 tracked keywords at $449. Semrush Advanced covers 40 websites and 5,000 daily keywords at $549. For an agency running dozens of client sites, Ahrefs is usually the cheaper seat-for-seat platform, which is why link-heavy agencies cluster there.
How the autopilot path works
Instead of researching in one platform, optimizing in another, then writing and publishing by hand, one workflow runs from keyword to live page.
We connect your site
Add your domain and our team wires up your CMS during onboarding, so there is no API key for you to generate and nothing to configure yourself.
Approve the keyword plan
Rankable researches the commercial keywords and buyer questions worth targeting and proposes a plan. You approve or edit it, which is the job you would otherwise do inside Keywords Explorer or Keyword Magic Tool.
Get optimized drafts
Each article is written to its keyword with on-page SEO built in, answer-first so it stays quotable for AI search results as well as classic listings.
Publish on a schedule
Approved articles go live on the cadence you set, internally linked and queued for indexing, so nothing waits on a manual paste at the end.
Which one fits your situation
Link building agency
Ahrefs, and it is not close. Prospecting, competitor link gap analysis, and outreach targeting all run off the index, and Ahrefs Advanced at $449 with 50 projects handles a real client roster. Add Semrush later only if clients start asking for paid search reporting.
In-house B2B marketing team
Semrush, usually. One subscription covers SEO plus the paid and competitor data your CMO will ask for, and the US keyword depth suits a domestic buyer. Our breakdown of the category is at b2b seo tools if you want the wider field rather than just these two.
Solo consultant or freelancer
Ahrefs Starter at $29 is the cheapest legitimate entry point in this comparison, though its data is capped. Semrush's free tier plus the seven-day trial is worth running first, because if the limits are enough for your client load you have saved yourself $1,500 a year.
Ecommerce team
Semrush, for the paid search overlap and product-term research. Ecommerce keyword sets are wide and long-tail heavy, which is exactly where the larger US index shows up. Neither tool writes category or collection copy for you.
Team that needs AI search visibility
Budget for the tier above the one you were planning on. Semrush prompt tracking starts at $199 Starter, not $139 SEO. Ahrefs Brand Radar AI starts at $199 on top of your plan. Nobody in this category includes serious AI tracking at the entry price.
Team whose real problem is output
If you already know your keywords and the articles simply are not getting written, another research platform will not fix it. An AI SEO software that researches, writes, and publishes solves a different constraint, and comparing it feature by feature against these two misses what you are buying.
Where Rankable fits, and where it does not
We are not a replacement for either of these platforms and we will not pretend otherwise. Here is the honest split.
| Capability | Rankable | Ahrefs or Semrush |
|---|---|---|
| Backlink index | No. We do not have one and do not claim one. | Yes. Ahrefs leads the category, Semrush is close behind. |
| Rank tracking | No rank tracker. | Yes, 750 to 5,000 keywords depending on tier. |
| Technical site audit | No site crawler. | Yes, both run technical audits. |
| Keyword research | Yes, focused on commercial and buyer-intent terms for the articles we plan. | Yes, far deeper databases with volume, difficulty, and SERP history. |
| Writes the article | Yes. Full drafts written to the target keyword. | No. Both surface opportunities for someone else to write. |
| Publishes to your CMS | Yes, on the schedule you set, wired up by our team during onboarding. | No. Copy and paste is on you. |
| Paid search and competitor ads data | No. | Semrush yes, extensively. Ahrefs limited. |
| Entry price | $49 a month for 4 articles on one blog. | $129 Ahrefs Lite, $139 Semrush SEO. |
Ahrefs vs Semrush: questions buyers actually ask
Which is better, Ahrefs or Semrush?
Ahrefs is better for backlink analysis and for running SEO across many sites cheaply. Semrush is better as an all-in-one platform and has deeper US keyword coverage. For a US content team the edge goes to Semrush; for a link building agency it goes to Ahrefs. Neither one is broadly better, and the honest answer depends entirely on which job you are hiring it for.
Is Ahrefs or Semrush cheaper?
Ahrefs is cheaper at the entry level, with a $29 Starter plan and $129 Lite against Semrush's $139 SEO plan, and cheaper at the top ($449 Advanced against $549). Semrush is cheaper once you add users, charging from $45 per extra seat against Ahrefs' $40 to $80 by tier with hard caps on how many seats you can add.
Ahrefs vs Semrush pricing: what does each actually cost?
Ahrefs: Starter $29, Lite $129, Standard $249, Advanced $449, Enterprise $1,499 a month, one user included on all but Enterprise. Semrush: SEO $139, Starter $199, Pro+ $299, Advanced $549 monthly, or $117.33, $165.17, $248.17 and $455.67 billed annually. Both figures were read from the vendors' own pricing pages in August 2026.
Do you need both Ahrefs and Semrush?
Most teams do not. The overlap is roughly 70 percent, and paying twice for keyword research and rank tracking is hard to justify below about $50,000 a month in SEO-driven revenue. The teams that genuinely run both are usually large agencies using Ahrefs for link data and Semrush for client-facing paid and competitor reporting. We worked through the math in do you need both Semrush and Ahrefs.
Is Ahrefs or Semrush more accurate?
Neither is reliably more accurate, and studies disagree. Semrush usually scores higher in head-to-head search volume tests, but it groups keyword variants, which inflates single-keyword figures. Ahrefs numbers tend to track closer to Search Console on a per-keyword basis. Use either for relative comparison between keywords and trust Search Console for absolute numbers.
Ahrefs vs Semrush for keyword research: which has more data?
Ahrefs has the larger global database at about 28.7 billion keywords against Semrush's 27.8 billion. For US search the ranking flips: Semrush indexes roughly 3.8 billion US keywords against Ahrefs' 2.5 billion. If your customers are American, Semrush surfaces more long-tail variants, which usually matters more than the global total.
Does Ahrefs or Semrush track AI search visibility?
Both do, and both meter it. Semrush includes 50 AI prompts daily on the $199 Starter plan, 100 on Pro+, and 200 on Advanced, with the $139 SEO plan getting no daily prompt allowance. Ahrefs sells Brand Radar AI from $199 a month on top of your plan, with prompt packs at $50, $100, and $250. Budget one tier higher than you planned.
What happened to the Semrush Pro, Guru, and Business plans?
Semrush retired those plan names. The current ladder is SEO at $139, Starter at $199, Pro+ at $299, and Advanced at $549 a month. Any article still quoting Guru at $249.95 or Business at $499.95 has not been updated since the change, which is a useful signal about how current the rest of its claims are.
Is there a cheaper alternative to Ahrefs and Semrush?
Yes, but check what you are giving up. Cheaper research tools exist, and content tools like Surfer cover optimization rather than research. Rankable starts at $49 a month but has no backlink index, no rank tracker, and no site audit. It writes and publishes the articles instead, which is a different purchase, not a discount version of the same one.
Stop paying for research you never turn into articles
Rankable researches the keywords, writes the optimized posts, and publishes them on your schedule, starting at $49 a month.
