Semrush API Alternatives: Every Semrush API Competitor Compared on Price, Limits and What It Returns
Semrush is the only major SEO platform that puts its API behind the top tier. API data integration starts on Advanced at $549 a month, while Ahrefs ships API and MCP access from $129, SE Ranking includes an API on every plan from $129, and Serpstat opens one at $100. If the API is the only reason you are pricing Advanced, you are paying about $420 a month for a checkbox. Here is what each option costs and what it actually returns.

Why people go looking for a Semrush API alternative
Almost nobody shops for a Semrush API alternative because the data is bad. They shop because of where the API sits in the price list. Semrush publishes four self-serve tiers, SEO at $139, Starter at $199, Pro Plus at $299 and Advanced at $549, and API data integration appears only on Advanced. So a team that wants to pull a few thousand keyword rows a month has to buy the plan built for 40 websites and a large agency. Every other vendor in this comparison unlocks an API far lower down the ladder.
That makes the decision much simpler than the listicles suggest. If you need the same class of data, Ahrefs includes API and MCP access from Lite at $129 with 1,000 credits per user, SE Ranking includes an API with every subscription starting at $129, and Serpstat opens 200,000 monthly credits on Team at $100. If you only need raw rows and no dashboard at all, DataForSEO has no subscription and a $50 minimum payment. We break the Semrush side down in detail on our Semrush API pricing page, and the Ahrefs side on Ahrefs API alternatives.
There is a second group worth separating out, because the wrong purchase here is expensive. A lot of people are told to get the Semrush API when what they actually want is the work done: keyword research turned into published pages, on a schedule, without anyone writing integration code. That is a different product and a different price line. Rankable sits in that second group, and we are explicit below about the data we do not sell, because buying us expecting an index API would be a mistake.

| Serpstat Agency | $410 | 2,000,000 credits a month | Search, backlink, rank, audit |
| DataForSEO | Pay as you go | No plan, $50 minimum | SERP, keyword, backlink rows |

| Rankable Scale | $149 | No per-call units | Our articles and your sites |
Serpstat Individual at $50 has no API, so Team at $100 is the real entry point. SE Ranking also sells a standalone API add-on priced in euros rather than dollars, so we have left those figures out of a USD table. Rankable's row is deliberately different: our API returns our own content and your site records, and we do not operate a backlink index or a keyword database, so it is not a like for like replacement for the others.
What to check before you swap an SEO API
Four things that decide whether a migration is cheap or painful.
Which tier the API is actually on
This is the whole reason most people are on this page. Semrush puts API data integration on Advanced at $549 and nowhere else, so there is no way to buy a small API. Ahrefs, SE Ranking and Serpstat all open one between $100 and $129. Price the cheapest eligible tier at each vendor rather than comparing headline entry prices, because the entry price is often for a plan with no API at all.
How the units are metered
Credits, rows and requests are not the same unit and vendors rarely publish a per-unit dollar rate. Ahrefs meters API credits per user, 1,000 on Lite and unlimited on Standard and Advanced. Serpstat publishes flat monthly credit pools, 200,000 on Team and 2,000,000 on Agency. Estimate your monthly call volume before you compare, because a cheap plan with a small pool is not cheap.
Whether you need an index at all
A large share of API projects only ever query the customer's own site: impressions, clicks, positions and pages. Google Search Console exposes all of that through a free, first party API with generous quotas. If that is your use case, no paid SEO API is the correct answer and you can stop shopping now.
Rate limits and contract shape
Serpstat publishes one request per second on Team and ten on Agency, which matters more than the credit pool for anything time sensitive. Ahrefs Enterprise is annual commitment only. DataForSEO has no subscription at all and a $50 minimum payment, which is the lowest risk way to test a data source properly.
How to replace the Semrush API without overbuying
Four steps, in the order that keeps the bill down.
Write down the endpoints you actually call
List the specific data you pull and how often: keyword volumes, backlinks, SERP positions, site audits. Most migrations turn out to need two or three endpoints rather than a whole platform, and that shrinks the eligible list immediately.
Check the free first party option first
If any part of the list is data about your own properties, pull it from the Google Search Console API instead. It is free and authoritative for your sites. Only the queries about other people's sites need a paid index behind them.
Price the cheapest eligible tier, not the entry tier
For each vendor, find the lowest plan that includes an API and enough units for your call volume, then compare those numbers. That comparison looks nothing like the pricing page headlines and it is the only one that reflects your real bill.
Run both sources in parallel for a month
Metrics differ between indexes, so volumes and difficulty scores will not match Semrush exactly. Run the new source alongside the old one for a billing cycle and check the decisions change, not just the numbers, before you cancel anything.
Which alternative fits which job
You only query your own sites
Use the Google Search Console API. It is free, first party and quota limited rather than credit limited, and it returns the clicks, impressions and positions that most internal dashboards are actually built on. Paying $549 for this is the single most common overbuy we see.
You need raw rows at volume, no dashboard
DataForSEO is built for exactly this. There is no subscription and no seat, just a $50 minimum payment and per-service consumption, which makes it the cheapest way to run a high volume pipeline. Expect to do more parsing work yourself.
You want a platform and an API in one bill
SE Ranking includes API access with every subscription from Core at $129, and Serpstat opens 200,000 credits on Team at $100. Both give you a working dashboard for the team plus programmatic access, which is what most people assumed they were buying from Semrush in the first place.
You are deep in backlink analysis
Ahrefs is the closest substitute for the data itself and now lists API and MCP access from Lite at $129 with 1,000 credits per user, moving to unlimited credits on Standard at $249. That is a far cheaper entry point than $549 for a comparable class of index.
You wanted the pages written, not the rows
If the plan for that API was always to turn keyword data into published articles, the API is a detour. A production tool prices the output directly and skips the integration project. Read the scope note in the next section before assuming we cover the data side, because we do not.
Where Rankable fits, and where it does not
We are not a drop-in replacement for the Semrush API and it would be dishonest to imply otherwise. This table is the scope, including the rows where the answer is no and you should buy one of the vendors above instead.

Questions buyers ask about replacing the Semrush API
What is the best Semrush API alternative?
It depends on which of three jobs you have. For your own site's data, the Google Search Console API is free and correct. For raw rows at volume with no dashboard, DataForSEO has no subscription and a $50 minimum payment. For a platform plus an API in one bill, SE Ranking includes API access on every plan from $129 and Serpstat opens 200,000 credits on Team at $100, both far below the $549 Semrush charges for Advanced.
Which Semrush plan has API access?
Only Advanced, at $549 a month. Semrush lists API data integration as an Advanced feature, and the SEO tier at $139, Starter at $199 and Pro Plus at $299 do not include it. There is no smaller API plan and no per-call top-up on the lower tiers, which is why the API is such a common reason to switch vendors.
Is there a cheaper Semrush API competitor?
Yes, several, and the gap is large. Serpstat Team includes an API at $100, Ahrefs Lite and SE Ranking Core both at $129, against $549 for Semrush Advanced. That is $420 a month, or $5,040 a year, for access to a comparable class of data. Check units and rate limits before switching, since the credit pools differ a lot between them.
Is there a free Semrush API alternative?
For your own sites, yes. The Google Search Console API is free, first party and quota limited rather than credit limited, and it returns clicks, impressions, positions and pages. For competitor data there is no free equivalent, because running a web-scale crawl and index is the expensive part of what you are buying.
How much does the Semrush API cost per request?
Semrush does not publish a per-request dollar rate. It publishes a tier, Advanced at $549 a month, which lists API data integration as an included feature. Any per-unit figure you find on a third-party blog is an estimate. We keep the measured detail current on our Semrush API pricing page.
Does Rankable have an SEO API?
Yes, and it is important to be precise about what it is. Rankable's API is read-only, included flat on Scale at $149 with no per-call units, and it returns your site records and the articles we have produced for you. It is not an index API. We do not run a backlink index or a keyword database, so if you need competitor data programmatically, buy one of the vendors in the table above.
Can I switch from the Semrush API without breaking my reports?
Plan for the numbers to move. Keyword volumes, difficulty scores and backlink counts are index-specific, so a switch changes the values even when the underlying reality has not. Run both sources for one billing cycle, compare the decisions rather than the raw figures, and only then retire the old integration.
Should I buy an SEO API or a content tool?
Ask what you will do with the response. If the answer is that a person reads it and then commissions an article, you are paying to move data between two humans and a content tool is the shorter path. If the answer is that software acts on it automatically at scale, you need the API. We compare the two purchases on our SEO API pricing page.
If the API was a means to published pages, skip it
Rankable researches keywords, writes the articles and publishes them on your schedule. Growth covers 5 sites and 20 articles at $59, Scale covers 25 sites and 100 articles plus the read-only API at $149. Start a 14 day trial and compare that against $549.
