The cheapest real alternative to Semrush depends on the job you pay it for. For rank tracking and site audits, SE Ranking Core is $129 a month with four times the tracked keywords. For competitor keyword and ad research, SpyFu starts at $33. For occasional lookups, Ahrefs Starter is $29. For your own site's search data, Google Search Console costs nothing. And if what you need is the SEO work done rather than more reports, Rankable is $99 a month. Semrush's own cheapest paid plan is SEO at $139 a month, or $117.33 a month billed annually. That is the number every alternative below is measured against.

Most "Semrush alternatives" lists rank thirty tools by features and quote prices the vendors have since changed. This page does the opposite: it starts from the Semrush plan you are paying for, names the job, and prices the cheaper tool that does that job. All prices are US list prices read from each vendor's pricing page.

What Semrush actually costs

Semrush planMonthlyBilled annuallyWhat it adds
SEO$139$117.33 a month5 websites, 500 keywords tracked daily, site audit
Starter (SEO + AI Search)$199$165.17 a monthAI visibility tracking, MCP access
Pro+$299$248.17 a monthMore markets, locations and websites
Advanced$549$455.67 a monthAPI access and automation

Each plan includes one user. Extra users start at $45 a month each, so a three-person team on the SEO plan pays $229 a month, not $139. A year on monthly billing is $1,668; on annual billing it is about $1,408. See our full Semrush pricing breakdown for the limits on each tier.

What is the cheapest alternative to Semrush?

For most small teams the cheapest like-for-like alternative is SE Ranking Core at $129 a month, or $103.20 billed annually. It tracks 2,000 keywords daily against Semrush SEO's 500, covers 10 projects, includes a site audit, backlink research and 25 AI-written articles, and extra seats start at $16 instead of $45. The monthly saving is only $10, but with two extra people the bill is $161 against $229 at Semrush.

If you mostly use Semrush to see which keywords and ads a competitor buys, SpyFu is the cheaper buy. Membership starts at $33 a month with unlimited searches and downloads and a 30-day money-back guarantee. Over a year that is $396 against $1,668, a saving of $1,272. You give up the site audit, the content tools and most of the AI visibility reporting.

If you open Semrush a few times a month to check a domain or a keyword, Ahrefs Starter at $29 covers occasional lookups for $348 a year. It is a light plan; anyone doing weekly research will outgrow it and land on Ahrefs Lite at $129, which is no cheaper than SE Ranking. We compared that ladder in our cheaper alternative to Ahrefs guide.

The pattern is the same for every row. Semrush is cheap per feature and expensive per feature you actually use. Write down the three reports you opened last month. If they all sit in one row of this table, the tool in that row is your cheaper alternative.

Is there a cheaper version of Semrush?

Yes, two. The SEO plan at $139 is the cheaper version of the $199 Starter plan: it drops the AI search tracking and keeps keyword research, position tracking and the site audit. Billing annually takes it to $117.33 a month. Semrush also has a free account with tight daily limits, which is enough to check a few keywords but not to run a project. If your team only used AI visibility once, moving from Starter to SEO saves $60 a month without changing tools.

Why is Semrush so expensive?

Semrush prices a toolkit that most buyers use a slice of. The $139 plan pays for a keyword database, a backlink index, position tracking, a site audit crawler and competitor research, all kept fresh for every market. The bill then grows with people: one user is included and each extra one is $45 a month or more. Agencies that add three colleagues and a second market find the real cost is closer to the Pro+ tier than the entry price.

Is SE Ranking cheaper than Semrush?

Yes, but by less than most reviews suggest. SE Ranking Core is $129 a month against $139 for Semrush SEO, and $279 for Growth against $299 for Semrush Pro+. The real gap is in what each dollar buys: Core tracks 2,000 keywords daily against 500, and an extra seat costs $16 rather than $45. One caution for anyone comparing reviews: SE Ranking shows euro prices to European visitors, so a round-up written in Europe will quote numbers that do not match the US page.

When cheaper is the wrong question

Every tool above, Semrush included, sells data. None of them changes your website. A cheaper dashboard still leaves someone to rewrite the title tags the audit flagged, fix the schema, add internal links and write the articles the keyword gaps call for. For a small team that is where the money actually goes, and it is the reason many Semrush subscriptions are paid for and barely used.

Rankable is an AI SEO agent built for that half. Starter is $99 a month for one site: it audits the site, writes up to 60 fixes a month into WordPress or a file-served site (titles, meta descriptions, internal links, schema, image alt text, robots.txt and the sitemap) and researches, writes and publishes 4 articles a month into the gaps the audit finds. Growth is $249 for three sites and Agency is $599 for fifteen; yearly billing is half price, so Starter is $49.50 a month. A year of Starter on monthly billing is $1,188, $480 less than Semrush SEO.

It is not a like-for-like swap. Rankable does not track rankings, it does not run a backlink index and it has no keyword database to browse. If daily positions are the report you open most, a rank tracker with daily SERP positions and drop alerts plus Search Console covers that job for far less than a suite. Every Rankable account starts with a free site audit and action plan, and you can compare the whole market on our AI SEO pricing table or the SEO software prices comparison.

How much can you save by switching from Semrush?

Against Semrush SEO on monthly billing ($1,668 a year), the yearly saving is $120 with SE Ranking Core, $1,272 with SpyFu and $1,320 with Ahrefs Starter. On annual billing the gap with SE Ranking stays small: $1,238.40 a year against about $1,408. The bigger saving usually comes from seats. If you pay for two extra Semrush users, the $90 a month they cost is often more than the difference between any two plans.

If you also need one specific report that only Semrush has, check our SE Ranking pricing page for its add-ons before you move.

Before you cancel Semrush

Export your position tracking history and any site audit you want to keep; neither carries over to another tool, and a new tracker starts its history on the day you add the keywords. Cancel a monthly plan a few days before renewal. Annual plans are paid upfront, so if you are mid-year, set up the cheaper tool alongside it and switch fully at renewal.
